Your website is often the first impression a potential client gets of your business. Before they pick up the phone, send an email, or tap ‘book now’, they’ve already made a snap judgement about whether they trust you. Most of the mistakes that quietly push people away are completely fixable.
Here are five of the most common ones we see — and what to do about them.
Within a few seconds of landing on your site, a visitor needs to know three things: what you do, who you do it for, and why they should care. If your homepage leads with something vague like “Welcome to our website” or a mission statement that could belong to any business, you’ve already lost them. Lead with clarity. A simple, direct headline that speaks to your ideal customer’s problem is worth more than any clever tagline.
People won’t go hunting for a way to contact you. If your call to action is buried at the bottom of the page, hidden in a dropdown menu, or just doesn’t exist, you’re leaving money on the table. Every page of your site should guide visitors towards one specific action — whether that’s booking a call, requesting a quote, or signing up to your list. Make it obvious, make it easy, and make it impossible to miss.
More than half of web traffic now comes from mobile devices, and that number is even higher if your audience is finding you through social media. If your site is hard to navigate on a phone — tiny text, buttons that are too close together, images that don’t load properly — visitors will bounce without a second thought. A mobile-friendly experience isn’t a nice-to-have anymore. It’s the baseline.
Mismatched fonts, colours that clash, a logo that looks different on every page — these things might seem minor, but they erode trust faster than you’d think. Consistent branding signals that you’re professional, established, and reliable. It tells a potential client that you pay attention to detail. If your website feels cobbled together, they’ll wonder if your actual work will too. A cohesive visual identity doesn’t require a huge budget — it just requires intention.
People buy from people they trust — and your website needs to do that trust-building work before you ever get on a call. That means showing real results, featuring client testimonials, and giving people a genuine sense of who you are. Stock photos and generic copy don’t cut it. Even a short paragraph about how you work, a few kind words from happy clients, or a case study showing what you’ve achieved for someone just like them can make a huge difference to whether someone reaches out or moves on.
You don’t need a complete overhaul to start seeing results. Often, fixing just one or two of these issues can make a real difference to how many enquiries you get. Start with the thing that feels most broken, and go from there.
